Title challenge: GU expect Gumbo to win silverware this season

Although the targets appear stiff considering that GU is rebuilding its team after a below par campaign, newly appointed communications manager, Kabelo Brown, said Gumbo signed a contract with the club with intention to deliver. Brown said they have made it clear to Gumbo that they want to win the Mascom Top eight and other competitions, adding that their targets are simple.

The GU publicist said the coach was given support and has been provided with the necessary tools for him to succeed.  He said they had recruited all the players the coach demanded, and released those deemed surplus to requirements.

However, Brown said they were not going to put any pressure on the coach. He added that even GU players are aware of their obligation. He said the team takes care of them and they are paid on time.

Brown further said they would evaluate their progress at the end of the season. He said although the team was catching up although they had not started the league on a good note.

The team lost 3-2 to Notwane in their last game. GU is only two points off the pace and Brown is adamant they are on track to meet their targets.

The club has a sound administration and sponsorship plan but this has not been matched by the team’s results in the past seasons.

The team engaged  Gumbo at the beginning of the last season and the Zimbabwean mentor has already embarked on a rebuilding exercise.  He has promoted several youngsters like 17 year-old Kabelo Mooketsane. On Sunday, GU narrowly defeated Premier League minnows Sankonyo Bush Bucks 1-0, when it seemed the two teams were destined for a draw.
