Child drowns, granny horrified

 

The granny acted quickly to notify the police who ruled out foul play and the granny has now joined fellow aggrieved at the vigil to bury the baby.

The incident happened in Gweta when the baby drowned in a 20- litre water container last Thursday according to the police.

District Number five-deputy officer commanding, Superintendent John Kelebeng said the incident happened at Tumelo ward in Gweta.

Kelebeng said on Friday that the child was left in the custody of an elder parent.

Kelebeng said the elder who was left with the child reported the drowning case to the police and the child was certified dead at the Gweta Primary hospital.

Contacted for details, Gweta station commander Nelson Museke said the child was playing with another toddler in the yard.

The deceased apparently jumped into the container, which was put by the standpipe to collect water from a dripping tap.

Museke said although the bucket was half full the child somehow drowned and was discovered by another six-year-old child who had been sent by her aunt to fetch water.   Museke said the aunt was cooking inside the house when the drowning happened.

 Meanwhile superintendent Kelebeng also revealed that police in Maun are investigating an 18-year-old man who is accused of raping a four-year-old girl still last Thursday at Moeti ward.

Kelebeng said the man who is cousin to the child’s family, was left to look after the four-year-old, but raped her. The accused is in police custody while investigations continue.

Kelebeng explained that in Gumare, police are investigating a suspected case of arson in which a man lost all his valuables also on Thursday last week after his hut was gutted by fire. He said the value of the goods inside the hut is still not known.

Kelebeng said a young boy who reported the matter to the police said he saw someone torching the hut before disappearing into the night. Police investigations into this case are continuing.
