Man arraigned for killing girlfriend

The state alleges that 25-year-old Letlhogile Lenkokame murdered his 21-year-old girlfriend Lame Gagogosha on September 5 at Block 10 location.

Prosecutor Ronny Mmuso said that the state opposed the accused being granted bail because investigations are still at initial stages.

He said: “We arrested the accused after he was admitted to the Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital recently. He was admitted after he tried to take his life by overdosing on pills. Secondly at this stage relatives of the deceased and the public at large are still angered by her death and they may harm the accused if he is granted bail.”

Mmuso added: “The accused is facing a very serious charge that may attract the death penalty if he is found guilty. We fear that he may also abscond from trial if he is given bail. We therefore submit that he must be remanded in custody.” Senior Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu ruled that the accused should be remanded in custody and should appear in court on October 2 for status hearing.

Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man appeared before Principal Magistrate Sijabuliso Siziba for obtaining by false pretences.

The state alleges that Phillemon Mazowe obtained P2,500 from Osetse Matshameko at Matshelagabedi village about 15 kilometers east of Francistown in 2011 by purporting to sell her a plot while knowing that the plot was not his.

Mazowe pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that he did not have legal justification for committing the crime.

He asked the court to give him a chance to compensate Matshameko the money he took from her.

Siziba gave him until October 27 to have compensated Matshameko.
