BGU secretary general, Mpho Kelosiwang explained that the men’s section will be divided into three categories being A-Division (handicap 0-9), B-Division (handicap 10-16), C-Division (handicap 17-24).

The women’s section will be divided into two categories being A-Division (0-15) and B-Division being handicap 16-30.  He said that the tournament is one of the biggest events in the BGU calendar.

The net score determines the overall winner and this provides an equal chance for every participant to win the tournament.

Following the sponsorship to the tune of P80, 000, Stanbic Bank has been given the naming rights for the tournament.

“The relationship between BGU and Stanbic has grown from strength to strength over the past four years and we remain hopeful that it will continue to grow into the future,” said Kelosiwang.

He said the tournament is a medal competition with the winner being determined over 36 holes of play in the two days.

He said over the past four years, the tournament had proven to be extremely popular and the 2014 edition will not be an exception.  Over 150 participants from within and outside Botswana are expected to take part at the event.

He said their aim is to see the partnership improve the quality of the game of golf in the country.  “After some consultations between BGU and Botswana Ladies Golf Union (BLGU), we decided to open up all our events, except for the Botswana Open and the Ladies Golfers of Botswana tournaments.

The former is for male golfers only. We believe that this will further enhance our unique selling point that golf is a family sport,” Kelosiwang said.

He said some people still regard golf as a sport for the elite, which is not the case.

Kelosiwang said as a way of promoting the sport, BGU has put in place comprehensive development programmes aimed at both promoting the sport to juniors and developing them into elite athletes.
