The dinner was hosted to celebrate contributions made by the performing arts employees who participated and represented the ministry in the Public Service Performing Arts Competitions held in June. The team participated in the Choir, Traditional Dance Group, Beauty Pageants and Athletics categories.

Makgato-Malesu said the objective of Performing Arts competitions is to promote the roles, professionalism and visibility of Public Service.  She added that the competitions are there to unearth talent across the public service.

Furthermore, she said she has observed through the competition that people were able to relax.  She said that this is because performing arts revitalise people’s energy as they rejuvenate the mind and soul of professionals.

“What you do outside your mandate contributes to your core. It actually contributes to your everyday wellbeing, and the competitions did just that,” she said.

In addition, the minister said the talent that employees have could be a source of livelihood as it can generate income and employment as well as reduce poverty.

Makgato-Malesu them to work together as a team with the understanding that the sum of a collective is worth much more than individual effort and contributions.

For her part, MIT permanent secretary, Banny Molosiwa, said that it is obvious that music and the arts play a pivotal role in structuring social life, enhancement of social harmony and enrichment of cultural experience and identity.

Molosiwa added that arts and culture help the nation shape its identity as well as aid in enriching cultural heritage. “As we pursue our mandate of creating an enabling environment for the development of sustainable industries and trade, we recognise the creative industry as one of the industries that has great latent potential which, if tapped into, could blossom and contribute to the enhancement of the livelihood of our people through income generation and job creation,” she said.

The employees were each awarded with certificates of appreciation as a form of encouragement to continue shining in their fields and outside the office.
