The key speaker will be Botswana Confederation of Manpower and Commerce (BOCCIM) CEO Maria Machailo-Ellis who is expected to discuss the mining industry’s contribution to the economy.

Mining and related activities account for about 38% of Botswana’s real gross domestic product, and more than 50% of government revenue.

The breakfast seminar will also be addressed by a representative of Marsh’ Mining, Metals and Minerals Division, Leon Rossouw, who will discuss uninsured and uninsurable risks.

“Insurance companies maintain profitability in large part due to their ability to classify risks and price them appropriately.

“In some cases, an individual may be considered a poor risk that a company may consider it an unwise business to insure,” reads a statement from Marsh.

Charlton Dzwairo from Marsh’s Mining, Construction & Parastatals division will present on mining rehabilitation. Mining, particularly surface mining requires large areas of land to be temporarily disturbed.

“This raises a number of environmental challenges, including soil erosion, dust, noise and water pollution, and impacts on local biodiversity. Steps are taken in modern mining operations to minimise impacts on all aspects of the environment,” added the statement.

Another Marsh representative, Ronnie Doyle, will discuss risk management, including evolving risk strategies, risk financing, the risk management profession, risk analytics and core property or casualty coverage issues.
