However, Sir Ketumile’s private secretary Charles Masilo told The Monitor the allegations are without basis. “What I know is that we are busy planning on renovating State House No 3, because it is a very old building. We are not aware of any spying activities at the residence; Why would it be the only state house under surveillance,” retorted Masire’s right hand man.

Masire recently wrote the Botswana Democratic Party an open letter through the Sunday Standard challenging them to dare call him for a disciplinary hearing, after BDP secretary General Mpho Balopi told the same paper that the party is in the process of disciplining the former president for his utterances at the funeral of departed opposition leader Gomolemo Motswaledi in Serowe.

A security source told The Monitor that he would not be surprised if intensive spying on Masire’s residence could cause him to flee the residence. The source revealed that just outside Masire’s residence, a spy post has been established on a full-time basis to watch Masire’s every move and also monitor who goes into that residence.

“They work in shifts, it is a post based in the kindergarten just across the gate of Masire’s residence.

“There is always someone with a bottle of water, who is then relieved by others when it is his time to knock of.” But other sources claim Masire has told friends that he has discovered that phones have been tapped, and the residence is also bugged, which makes him uncomfortable.
