This was the scene at the Moshupa Kgotla as the Bakgatla tribe celebrated Dikgafela in style. Members of the tribe came out in large numbers and were a combination of both young and old people. At the start of the event, old men were spotted carrying their ditilo tsa dikgole to sit in comfort to watch proceedings.

There was traditional food galore served and traditional dance troupes and choirs provided entertainment.

The people of Moshupa were also joined by dikgosi from neighbouring villages like Thamaga, Manyana and Ranaka amongst others. When addressing the sizeable crowd that converged at the event, Kgosi Oscar Mosielele, stated that it is important for culture to be preserved. He said that the fact that people still heed his request when he calls for Dikgafela is commendable. He said the life of a Motswana has always revolved around culture, and will continue that way. Mosielele also commended the youth who turned up to the Kgotla in large numbers.

“I am happy to see the youth here. I hope you will learn the ropes and get wisdom from your parents so that you continue the legacy of where they left off,” he said.

Mosielele encouraged people of his tribe to go out and plough now that it is September and rains are expected soon. He urged village men not to be lazy but rather frequent cattle posts. He added that men have tendencies of remaining behind when women go to the lands during the ploughing season.

Mosielele said culture plays a pivotal role in branding a country. He said cultural events like Dikgafela have the potential to attract visitors from other countries, who would be eager to witness what Botswana has to offer.
