Butlers frustrations cannot be ignored

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) had taken a gamble in appointing the Briton.Scepticism blew across, largely triggered by memories of another Briton, Colywn Rowe’s brief stint in charge of the Zebras. However, Butler has managed to grind results even under challenging circumstances.

He has not shied away from expressing his views particularly on social media, even if it means stepping on his employer’s toes.

Only this week, Butler narrated his fall-out with fellow countryman, Keith Masters who is the BFA chief executive officer. Unconfirmed reports say Butler was ready to quit his post but had a change of heart. In the past he has complained about the team’s preparations. He wants certain issues done better.

Despite the evident frustrations, Butler has done relatively well. He took the Zebras past two tough opponents in Burundi and Guinea Bissau in the preliminary stages of the qualifiers. Although the team has lost its last two matches, the manner in which they have played provides a glimmer of hope.

Fans seemingly believe in his philosophy, particularly youngsters and experienced campaigners.

The national team has for years been the preserve of tried and tested players from mostly big clubs. But Butler has dismantled that, even fishing talent from the less glamorous First Division league. He has widened his pool and a sparkling diamond. Segolame Boy was given a full 90 minutes debut on Wednesday, cementing the belief the Zebras future looks bright. The squad has a fine balance of experience and exuberant youth. Butler’s appointment appears a master-stroke. But some developments at Lekidi Centre, might destruct what Butler is trying to put together. Sebego is best advised to manage relations at BFA .least stifle progress. The media has been awash with reports of several fall-outs at the organisation. The Zebras’ games are poorly marketed at a time when its coffers are dry. On Wednesday only a few supporters turned up to watch a powerhouse like Senegal battle against the Zebras.

Players have consistently complained about allowances and this too needs to be thoroughly ironed-out. A reliable source of income is a must if the Zebras are to fly out for assignments with minimum glitches. Issues of finance will continue to be the albatross around BFA’s neck and by extension the source of tensions if left unresolved. The trip to Guinea Bissau left reports that some funds were unaccounted for. Sebego needs to keep his eyes on the ball to ensure the association runs smoothly. Heated arguments and a poor balance sheet do not make local football “the beautiful game”.

The creation of a conducive environment for Butler, the players and everyone else charged with taking football forward is paramount.
