Bank deposits rise

According to figures released by the Bank of Botswana (BoB) this week, deposits of non-resident businesses, households and local government increased by 88.1 percent, 9.6 percent and 26.8 percent respectively. In contrast, deposits for resident businesses and central government decreased by P833 million and P55 million respectively.

In June, businesses accounted for 75 percent of bank deposits compared to 22 percent for households. While households hold a smaller portion of banks’ deposits, they continue to dominate the uptake of credit. As at June, households held 56.8 percent of commercial banks credit.
