Unseeded teams begin Independence Cup hunt

There has been little notable football activity in recent weeks in Francistown and the Independence Cup comes as a godsend.

This will be the only cup competition featuring a Francistown Premier League team this season as ECCO City Greens failed to make it to the Mascom Top tournament.

The Independence Cup matches will be played at the Francistown Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. Winners of the group matches will meet seeded teams in the quarterfinals.

Tomorrow morning, Red Bull FC who recently won promotion to Division One meet third tier side Fighters in the first match.

The winner plays ECCO in the quarterfinals next weekend.

The second match tomorrow pits Division One outfit, Mexican Dogs against TAFA FC.

Both are seasoned campaigners in the Independence Cup but have often failed to make an impact. The winner will play First Division side, Tonota FC in the quarterfinals.

On Sunday, First Division club Amakhosi FC play Division One side, Calendar Stars in the first match of the day, with the winner facing Sua Flamengos in the next round.

Former Premier League side, TAFIC are the only top team playing this weekend. They face little known Division Two team, Heartbreakers on Sunday.

TAFIC have a good record in the tournament having been crowned champions before.

The winner between TAFIC and Heartbreakers play Division One team, Eleven Angels in the quarterfinal.

The women’s competition will also start this weekend although fixtures were not available at the time of going to press.
