Boko is contesting the Gaborone Bonnington North constituency with Gaolathe is the other side, Gaborone Bonnington South.

The assemblies were initially planned for areas contested by Boko and the late UDC secretary general Gomolemo Motswaledi. After Motswaledi’s death, Gaolathe was chosen Boko’s running mate.

The UDC members resolved to hold special assemblies on different dates at the duo’s constituencies at the party’s July Special conference in Serowe.

The purpose was to extend special support to the two, given that they are forced to travel and launch other candidates around the country.

Party members believe that because of such commitments the lead campaigners are not able to invest as much time as they would have wished to campaign in their respective constituencies.

This week Gaolathe said that the special assemblies would be in the form of rallies as well as house-to-house campaigns.

The two separate assemblies were initially scheduled to be held four weeks before the elections but postponed following the death of Motswaledi.

“The head of elections has already caucused with various groups and teams within the party to distil a programme or schedule of special house-to-house campaigns in these two constituencies.  The party will soon announce the schedule officially,” Gaolathe told Mmegi.

At the UDC’s Serowe conference, the party also resolved to set up a task team to fight corruption as a matter of urgency. Gaolathe stated that a task team is already at work, and have begun the assignment of collating information focusing on governance lapses and costly maladministration on the part of the current government.

“An initial team to be supplemented by other specialists is already at work. This team as part of the professionalisation of our organisation” he said without naming team members.

The conference also mandated the late Motswaledi to arrange a meeting with BOFEPUSU leaders to see how the UDC and the union can best work with each other to address the plight of workers.

However Gaolathe said that they would not hold a special meeting with BOFEPUSU, as there were ongoing meetings with various leaders of the federation on policy and political issues of interest.
