A statement from the Office of the President says:

“In so doing the Judicial Service Commission considered the names of candidates who had been submitted and recommended by the All Party Conference to the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration.

The Judicial Service Commission then resolved and appointed the seven under listed individuals as members of the Independent Electoral Commission:

(i) Hon Judge Abednego Tafa - Chairman

(ii) Mr John Carr- Hartley - Member

(iii) Mrs Shaboyo Motsamai - Member

(iv) Mr Alpheous Matlhaku - Member

(v) Mr Molefe Phirinyane - Member

(vi) Mrs Agnes Setlhogile - Member

(vii) Mrs Martha Sayed - Member

The President further indicated that Botswana had extended an invitation to SADC to observe the elections. “Highlighting that there could be further requests for observer status from other international organisations, as well as local NGO’s.

He underscored that this is the trend internationally and that these exercises will furthermore underline the transparency that Botswana is renowned for in this regard,” says the statement. Also present at today’s swearing in ceremony were His Lordship the Honourable Chief Justice Maruping Dibotelo, the IEC’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Gabriel Seeletso, Attorney General and the Attorney General, Dr. Athaliah Molokomme.
