According to onlookers, D’Arcy attempted to mediate in a fight between rival gang members and was instead set upon by the young men, led by a certain “Shima”.

“Shima and his boys were fighting amongst themselves, hitting each other with bats and throwing bottles,” the eyewitness told Mmegi. “D’Arcy tried to intervene and calm the situation down because it was getting really serious as one guy was bleeding.

“However, Shima immediately turned on him and began striking him with a bat.” The eyewitness said D’Arcy was bleeding from the ear after the assault, while police and other security officers whisked Shima away. “The principal however, did not look severely injured,” the witness said. Letlhakane Police Station commander, superintendent Robert Mack said the principal had been left a “little wobbly” from the incident. “We have such a case and we are still investigating it. I can therefore, not say much more about it,” he said. In a separate incident, the Botswana Prisons Service is appealing to members of the public, to help in the recapture of four men, who escaped from prison while awaiting trial.  The men, Daniel Seitiiso, Mmusi Motsoko, Mooketsi Ramonwana and Kgotso Kgaudi, aged between 22 and 28 years, escaped from Kanye Prison on August 30.

They were in custody for crimes ranging from murder, house break-in and theft. Anybody with information leading to the recapture of the four prisoners is requested to inform the nearest prison or police station. Members of the public are advised not to attempt to restrain the suspects.
