The preliminary stages will be held on Saturday while the semi-finals slated for Sunday though BoBA spokesperson, Mmaotho Segotso said yesterday the schedule may change.

“We might not be able to hold the semi-finals this weekend because we have decided to increase the bouts by including young boxers in this year’s edition,” Segotso explained.

The championships received a boost when Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL) announced a P10,000 increase in sponsorship for this year’s event. The increase takes the sponsorship amount to P175,000.

The finals will take place on the weekend of September 6 at Botho College in Gaborone where the cream of Botswana boxers will exchange blows.

A week later, BoBA will hold its elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lobatse.

The current BoBA president, Michael Moroka is fighting to retain his position against Thato Patlakwe.

Moroka became president in 2010, taking over from Aldrin Tayane who did not seek re-election at the time. Moroka had previously served as the vice president in charge of technical affairs.

The vice presidency has attracted Gilbert Khunwane and Tabona Phalazi. Previously there were positions of vice president (technical) and vice president (administration), but the two were consolidated into one.

Willoughby Kemoen, Dirang Thipe and Irene Ntelamo have shown interest in the secretary general’s position, while Johannes Ditlhabang and Phetogo Tsheko will battle it out for the sports coordinator post. Segotso and Kenny Maragana are in the race for the spokesperson’s job.
