The event’s organiser Othusitse Mokhurutshe made this announcement, adding that it is hoped the show will revive the spirit of independence celebrations and restore the excitement that was once synonymous with Independence Day celebrations.

“What used to happen in previous years seems to be fading out. We hope to awaken the happy mood that used to surround every town and village in the country. Independence used to mean so much to Batswana,” he explained.

He also stated that the decline in the levels of activity surrounding the celebrations has negative implications in the long run because future generations might never hear the story of Botswana’s independence.

Mokhurutshe said Batswana should not forget where they come from and should ask themselves where they would be without the positive changes that came with independence. He said things like education, economic growth and the country’s peaceful ambience must be attributed to independence, adding that is why the day should not be ignored.

He further revealed that they chose September 29 so that the show is a build up to the actual Independence Day on September 30. He noted they want to allow people to go to the kgotla to celebrate on the day, as has been the norm in the past years. The event’s programme is divided into day and night activities. Pre-bought tickets are P80 and P100 at the door.
