Susu ilela suswana hits shelves

The three young men started as dancers under Kgomotsego Gabanamotse’s Somela Tsenya Crew, but have now started their own business called Mokgalajwe Promoting Business which has several promising Tswana music singers and actors under its belt.

According to group member Ishmael David who goes by the stage name Rre Bebe, this is their first comedy offering. The Mahalapye born actor told Showbiz that he joined forces with his homeboy Tsa Setoki and their friend Isaac Simon  or Galephirime from Tshesebe, to come up with this product after realising that some elders don’t respect youth and children. He said they are not happy to see some elders disrespecting and abusing children, sometimes punishing them for things they didn’t do.

“This is their warning message to elders that if they continue with this behaviour, children will revolt against them. With this comedy we want elders to remember the old adage ‘Susu ilela Suswana gore Suswana le ene a tle a go ilele’. Our viewers, especially youth should not misinterpret us and think that we are saying children should disobey their parents and elders,” explained the actor. Although they have never acted before, David says during their stint dancing for Somola Tsenya crew, many people suggested that they consider acting. They garnered a huge following and were invited to perform at weddings and parties. This encouraged them to create their own DVD.  David noted that they are inspired by comedians /actors Radijo, Ramosara and Ramonyaku, who they learnt a lot from. Although this is their first offering, the group has received an appeasing welcome. “We have just released our first product a few months ago, but we already have a very broad audience in Mahalapye, Palapye, Serowe, Francistown and Gaborone. Our DVD is selling fast,” he said.   Susu ilela Suswana depicts a story about two old men Rre Bebe and Galephirime who are close friends. One day the two arrive from the ploughing fields and Galephirime asks for water. He then helps himself to a mug with milk on realising that no one saw him. When Rre Bebe prepares himself tea, he notices that the milk is missing.  His first suspect is his son who he summons to ask about the milk. Rre Bebe’s son confidently takes out the mug, but is shocked to find it empty but denies drinking the milk. The culprit, Galephirime, informs Rre Bebe that his son needs to be disciplined. They take turns whipping the young man who wails in pain before he tlod them that he will revenge because he was punished for something he did not do. True to his word, Rre Bebe’s son goes on a rampage and assaults the two startled old men, who run away with the enraged young man hot on their heels.
