Interestingly, the current president of BOSETU, Shandukani Hlabano will not be available for re-election after serving two good terms.

His non-availability for re-election has since fueled long-term speculation that Hlabano could be eyeing the position of chief executive officer (CEO).

The position fell vacant a few months ago after the former CEO did not renew Justin Hunyepa’s contract. In a recent interview, Hlabano denied eyeing the CEO position.

BOSETU secretary general, Tobokani Rari has listed current vice president, Tebogo Sebogodi, recording secretary Bapaphi Tawana and an additional member in the current executive committee identified only as Dioka amongst the people that are not available for re-election.

The race for BOSETU presidency is very interesting and it pits three giants against each other.

Former secretary general Kwenasebele Modukanele who is also serving in the business wing of the union is in the race, as he wants to make a comeback into the union politics.

Caterpillar Hikuana who has been serving in the union committee of research and documentation also wants to succeed Hlabano as the next BOSETU president.

The other presidential candidate is Shylet Tshireletso, a lecturer at the Francistown College of Education (FCE). The race for the vice president brings former BOSETU publicity secretary, Mogomotsi Motshegwa and former Selebi-Phikwe region chairperson, Tlotlo Dibeela, face-to-face. Rari is likely to be retained unopposed as no one has declared interest in challenging him as the secretary general.

The incumbent treasurer general Samuel Aboneng is challenged by former Barolong region chairperson, Ofanna Wadipeba. Vice secretary general Innocent Mannathoko has challenges from Linda Sekgopa and Tutume region chairperson Botshelo Maruatona.

Publicity secretary, Solomon Batsietswe faces challenge from George Showa.

Hennel Kaisara is unopposed in the bid for re-election in the sports and culture portfolio.

In the national organising secretary position, incumbent Omphile Modise will slug it out with Wabo Tshosa. It is at this congress, held in an elections year, that the BOSETU will articulate its position on the hot potato that is partisan politics.
