Barclay’s Bank Botswana employee, Salma Baduel was part of the team that scooped first prize during the business strategy team competitions that were staged as part of the Pan Africa graduate training hosted in Gaborone for two weeks.

Baduel’s team, E-Point,  was voted the best of the 28 teams after they impressed the judges with their presentation on an envisaged electronic banking product they said would revolutionise point of sale in Africa, allowing users to pay using mobile phones where they cannot produce a card or where there is no connection to complete transaction. Baduel’s team said with 300 million mobile phones users in Africa, the E-point could be a revenue spinner for Barclays.

Another Barclay’s Bank Botswana graduate, Sefhemo Maseko who was the only Motswana in the first batch was in the team that finished in the top three. Maseko, a BSC Maths and finance graduate from the University of Botswana told The Monitor that the training programme has already taken him to such places as Johannesburg and the Drakensberg.

He is waiting to graduate in December and then come back and continue with the programme that runs for 18 months.

“You have to achieve a certain mark; we have assignments, we do presentations, we are to demonstrate hard skills and soft skills; so far I am performing really well. My mid year results are very good, I believe I will be in the top 20 of the 200 graduates”.

“I need to work hard, it is not a given that I will be fast tracked into a future leader of Barclay’s, we have been made aware that one has to score above 75% during the training programme,” said the 23-year-old Maseko.
