Badminton tournament shows growth

The second edition of the tournament sponsored by Landscape Solutions attracted 53 junior players from various clubs.

The tournament organiser, Modesto Madzambi said compared to last year, there has been a massive response from players.

Around 30 players competed in the first edition of the tournament held in Lobatse last year.

He explained that the second part of the tournament would be held at the end of the month when senior players will be in action.

He said the attendance is an indication that the event is growing and this has impressed the sponsor.

He said Landscape Solutions had injected P7,500 to finance the event. Madzambi said the Botswana Badminton Association (BBA) has used the competition to identify players that can be part of the national teams.

Last weekend in Jwaneng, Tumisang Olekantse, the top Under-19 player in Botswana and a bronze medallist at the Africa Youth Games (AYG) dominated the boys’ singles beating Tshepo Perekisi in the final.

The players then partnered to win the boys’ doubles. The two won bronze in the AYG in the boys’ doubles.

Mercy Boy won the girls’ singles title in Jwaneng by overcoming Maranyane Tuelo of Gobojango JSS. One Mongate and Pogisego Senyeletse finished as semi-finalists.

Boy went on to partner with Mphoyaone Keitheng to beat Keorapetse Moatshe and Onneile Magabu to win the girls’ doubles.

The team of Olekantse and Tuelo beat Perekisi and Magabu in the mixed doubles. Madzambi said the stage is now set for the seniors to face each other in Jwaneng.
