Getting it right first time: Sankoyo has started the season brightly

Week two of the Premier League proceeded with no news of a sponsor for the competition, but things are shaping up well for what promises to be thrilling campaign.

Bush Bucks, 2-1 victors over Motlakase Power Dynamos on the opening day, proved they are in the Premier League to compete when they swept aside Satmos by the same score line over the weekend. The feat was sweeter as it was achieved hundreds of miles away from their Maun base. The win saw the rookies temporarily take charge of the Premier League log. Mochudi Centre Chiefs moved above them on goal difference late on Saturday after a 4-2 win over last season’s runners-up, BDF XI.

The game in Molepolole was expected to produce sparks and lived-up to pre-match billings as a see-saw affair. BDF XI led 2-1 at one stage before Chiefs completed a comfortable come back to register their second win of the campaign.

Chiefs and Bush Bucks are the only two sides with a 100 percent record. Sankoyo spokesperson, Thato Molosi said the club is naturally elated with the bright start. “The team has started well. They put in a lot of hard work as they train twice. We do not have star players but we work as a team,” Molosi said.

In Lobatse, crowd pullers, Township Rollers and Extension Gunners settled for a thrilling 1-1 draw with the defending champions lucky to escape with a point. Madinda Ndlovu’s side has Gunners goalkeeper, Wagare Dikago to thank for a 90th minute howler, which allowed Rollers back into the match. Popa looked out of sorts until Dikago bailed them out when he let a harmless ball trickle into the net through his legs. Last season’s champions are yet to hit top gear after they opened their campaign with a draw against Police XI. The rear of the log has taken a predictable look with ECCO City Greens, touted as favourites for the drop, occupying 16th position. The financially troubled Francistown side has failed to win in two assignments, with their latest defeat coming at the hands of BMC.

Gaborone, Motlakase and BR Highlanders are the other two sides that remain point less. The three sides have played one game with their second matches postponed due to the unavailability of the Serowe Sports Complex.

It has been a brisk start to the season with 19 goals scored in last weekend’s six games.

Meanwhile, the new Premier League sponsor has not been named, although sources maintain a breakthrough is imminent.
