Mzwinila appears for unlawful wounding

Papers before court indicate that Mzwinila on August 10 unlawfully wounded one Thabo Hurdall by hitting him with the butt of a gun on the head.

Commander at the Tlokweng Police Station, Robson Maleka confirmed that Mzwinila turned himself in to the Tlokweng Police after a suspected shoot-out that happened in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Maleka further stated that investigations into the matter are underway. Mmegi learnt that before turning himself in, the Police had detained his fiancée, which may have urged him to turn himself in to the Police.

In court yesterday, Mzwinila, who indicated that he would not get legal representation, said that he was in position to make his plea.

“ I do not understand why the state wants the plea to be reserved, as I am in a position to make my plea now.” He said.

For their part, Inspector Elsier Kgaodi explained that plea should be reserved on the grounds that the case is a fresh matter and investigation into it just got underway. Kgaodi further told the court that she does not oppose bail for Mzwinila.

When the Mmegi crew visited the area where the shootout allegedly happened in Tlokweng, a man who preferred anonymity said that  “it was around 0130 Sunday morning, I did not see much but I remember hearing gun shots.

“When I peeped outside, all of a sudden there was a man inside my yard. But he quickly ran into a car that had parked just nearby,” he said.

The eyewitness further said “when I woke up the next day, I saw a bloody T-shirt hung on my back gate and some officers came that morning and took the T-shirt away.” The man added that when he asked around as to what had happened, he was told that the two men had a misunderstanding before the accused person shot at the man.

The injured man has since been released from hospital. Next court date has been slated for October 20.

Recently, serial armed robber, Mzwinila, who completed his 2003 Bank of Baroda armed robbery sentence, was granted bail by the Broadhurst Magistrate Court in a case in which he faced two counts of break-in and theft. In the matter in which he is still on bail, Mzwinila and two other men are accused of stealing cartons of cigarettes worth P29, 000 from a Block Three Industrial warehouse.
