Women in court on allegations of vehicle theft

The trial continued yesterday when the first state witness Otlametse Tiroyakgosi from the Department of Road, Transport and Safety, took to the stand. He told court that vehicle documents seized from the two accused were brought to his office for verification of authencity.

Tiroyakgosi said the documents depicted that the vehicle was a white 2007 Toyota Hilux double cab owned by Lerato Davis while the previous owner was Lesedi Motors.

He said the system however revealed that the vehicle was registered under Scania Botswana, who are the only listed owners.  He divulged that the engine number was different from the one written on the registration document.

“The engine number in the registration book returned as ‘no search’ on the computer but the disc showed that it was of the same vehicle. It was not registered under Scania Botswana but Fleight Services Botswana,” he said.

Tiroyakgosi explained that when punched into the computer, the serial number on the document showed digits for a transaction carried for a driver’s theory test transacted in 1997 under the name T Monametsi.

He said the number on the receipt also showed a transaction for a theory test payment that had been carried under Malebogo Ntsima in 2010. The security number on the document showed that it was issued for a duplicate registration book for another vehicle, issued in 2012. He further pointed out that while the licence number showed that it was issued for a different vehicle for the period February 2010 to January 2011, the document was printed on legitimate security papers from the transport office.

“The only distinctive difference was that it had contradicting information and that the security features used came into effect in December 2012 while the documents were dated 2007,” he said.   The state, which is represented by Lameck Kgosidiile, is expected to summon three more witnesses. The case continues in 2015.
