Katara Tsa Moya enters the fray

Other promising musicians like Kgokgonono followed the crop.

But of late this interesting type of music known for its freestyling and large group compositions, has taken a back seat as other genres came to the fore.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for dikhwaere as some local performers still find it interesting.

The latest to join the fray being a group called Katara Tsa Moya.

The group recently released their first album called Batsadi Bame, in which they attempted to revitalise the genre with a mixture of mid-tempo and faster tracks.

Lead vocalist Chairman Toteng has a wealth of experience in traditional music and his fluty voice gives the music a sensual feel.

Co-producer of the album, Victor Kootshotshe, has only sweet words for the elderly vocalist.

“Mr Toteng has always sang in the choir in his home village, Bobonong and his experience radiates in this recording.  He gave the music a lot of meaning,” Kootshotse said.

Although, he is confident that the album will have impact in the market, Kootshotse, was however open about its shortcomings too.

“This is a good album, but it could have been much better if we had another male vocalist to offer the listener more variety.  Toteng did a good job, but another voice would augment him very well,” he said.

The producers demonstrated some brilliant techniques in instrumentation to give the songs authority.

The snare drum dominates in almost all of them and provides cushion for the penetrative keyboards and percussions.
