Of crime in Maun and the peripheries

The men were arrested during a 23hrs00-raid in Kubung ward on Friday.  Maun police superintendent John Kelebeng told Mmegi that the men were caught following a tip-off.

The two men, aged 32 and 48, are the latest to be arrested in an increasing number of ivory cases in Ngamiland involving foreign nationals.

Still in Maun, Kelebeng said that three robbers who made away with goods valued at P 6,400 attacked a South African male tourist on Monday.

Kelebeng said the suspects in the case were still at large.

He also said that two men aged 19 and 24 were arrested on Sunday for breaking into Titan Drilling Company offices in Shakawe, and stealing $120 (P1,052.92).

He said the suspects were found in possession of the stolen foreign currency.

In Gweta, police arrested a man who is suspected of raping his former girlfriend over the weekend.  Kelebeng said the man, whose age is not known, allegedly raped the woman aged 21 years. He said the victim told the police that they were coming from a night out when her ex boyfriend locked her at his cousin’s house and raped her.

In Gudigwa village across the Okavango River, a mentally disturbed woman who recently disappeared with her two-year daughter, only to reappear without the child, has gone missing again.

Sarah Shoti, also known as Ndolo, went missing three months ago with her young daughter while she had gone out to gather wild berries.  The child was never found as Shoti revealed that jackals ate her.

Kelebeng told Mmegi that police in Seronga received another report that Shoti, 28, went missing again while out gathering wild berries last Thursday. He said that they are searching for her.

Meanwhile, Gumare police are also investigating a missing person’s case involving an elderly man of Etsha 6 village.  The 56-year-old man was allegedly in the company of his 40-year-old friend in Etsha 6 when he went missing from a shebeen.  Kelebeng said the friend who was with him reported him missing last Thursday, but the man has still not been found.

In Maun, a 28-year-old man has also gone missing after he fought with his 32-year-old girlfriend last week. Kelebeng said the man from Shashe ward in Maun was reported missing last Friday.
