Mmegi30yrs: Remembering some of our editors

Sechele Sechele 1993-2004

This was one of the longest serving editors who took over when Mmegi was a weekly paper to the time when it turned into daily in October 2003.

“When the paper transformed into a daily it was a very challenging time. We moved to daily with very limited resources – human and otherwise, and we had to do much with the little resources we had”.

Sechele affirmed that a daily was demanding and taking a toll on his health, and hence he decided to quit in 2004. He says that due to the serious shortage of staff, he was the editor but also had to do a lot of writing to fill the gap. He had taken over from Titus Mbuya who is now the Managing Director.

Mesh Moeti 2004-2006

He was uncompromising on the quality of copy and reporters knew this very well. ‘Mesh’ as he was affectionately known in the newsroom would not entertain any excuse for bad writing.

He hardly smiled with reporters especially during production deadlines.

The man behind the controversial “Vote Moupo” headline still believes in strict time management.

Gideon Nkala 2005-2012

In November 2005, Nkala was appointed editor after serving as editor of the sister publication The Monitor.

“Mmegi was then the flagship of Dikgang Publishing Company titles. I was at the helm until July 2011.

It was such a fulfilling vocation. In the newsroom we had an unwritten mantra that our job was to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

The task is not  so much about saving the world but to play a meaningful part and I believe we set the building blocks. I’m proud of the few courses of bricks I added on such as monumental task. I am only glad to have had an opportunity to serve such an institution”.

Tshireletso Motlogelwa 2012-2014

Being editor for a daily Mmegi was extremely fulfilling  and can best be described as the most important job in the media in the country.

“It’s like you can tell the nation what to discuss over the weekend, you give them a topic to talk about”.

For Motlogelwa, anyone who wants a challenging position should try this one. He is happy that the paper was doing well in terms of investigative journalism, as such stories are very informative.
