Family fingers cops after missing woman found dead

The deceased’s older sister, Malebo Ramocha told Mmegi that her sister, who was also known around the village by the name of Mmaonyana, went missing on July 13.

“ Mmaonyana went missing on the Sunday of July 13. Of course when she did not return home that night we did not press panic buttons because we though she would eventually come home,” she said.

Ramocha related that the family went around the village the next day to look for 29-year-old Mmaonyana but did not find her.

“She was mentally ill. We searched for her the whole day. On the third day we went to report her as missing,” she said.

Ramocha said the police only came once in search of her sister, even though they had promised to return for a more intense search. She said when the police failed to pitch the family went ahead with the search.

However the police have rubbished the family’s claims of negligence. Mochudi Police Assistant Station Commander, Wazha Zambezi said his officers responded to the matter as soon as it was reported.

“We received the report of a missing person on July 16. We set for Bokaa the next day with the help of officers from Morwa. Officers searched as far as Kopong and other surrounding villages,” he said.

Zambezi said on Tuesday they received a report that a body of an unidentified woman was found floating in the Bokaa dam.

“ We called in the family that had reported a missing person weeks earlier to identify the body. They confirmed that the body was indeed that of their relative,” he said.

Mmegi has learnt that some boys who were passing by the dam discovered the body. The deceased was buried yesterday.

Meanwhile police in Mochudi are investigating a case in which a 25-year-old woman was reportedly raped by her boyfriend’s friend. In her statement the woman said that she did not know the man’s name but had occasionally met him in the company of her boyfriend.

She said the man invited her for a night out, which she accepted before running off with her. She claimed the man drove to the bush in the village and raped her.
