Chess makes BOPSSA debut

The tournament has suffered a drawback after the North West pulled out due to logistical problems, leaving 10 regions to compete. BOPSSA publicity secretary, Lawrence Moseki said preparations for the schools tournament have been completed.

The competition will be used to select the Under-13 national teams for various codes that will represent the country at the regional COSSASA tournament in Zambia later this year. However, Moseki said chess and cricket will not be part of COSSASA games. The official opening of the BOPSSA games will be held at the Francistown Stadium.

Chess will be launched at a separate event at the Francistown College of Technical and Vocational Education Hall, a day after the official opening of the games.

A senior manager at African Copper Mining, Lucas Ntsipe is expected to officially open the games that will run until August 18.

“We will be using almost all sports facilities at the Francistown College of Technical and Vocational Education (FCTVE) and the Francistown Stadium,” said Moseki. Up to 1,300 pupils are expected to take part in the games.

Marvin Sports Clothing will sponsor the participants with BOPSSA branded t-shirts. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Local Government are the main sponsors of the annual ball games.

Moseki said 76 players will be selected to represent the country in different disciplines at the COSSASA Games from August 25-30 in Zambia. The national team selected from the BOPSSA games go into camp from August 18 to 24 August before departing for Zambia.
