Student faces murder of fellow student

Kebonye Nyeku is alleged to have beaten Emmanuel Nyaakwa with fists and kicks on July 31, after a misunderstanding, resulting in the latter being taken to a clinic in the village where he later passed away.

On Monday, Police Sub Inspector, Thulaganyo Pitso told Chief Magistrate, Gaedupe Makgato, that the State would call eight witnesses to testify in the matter.

He said he feared that if Nyeku was granted bail, other students at the school would pounce on him in retribution and as such the accused needed to be remanded in custody for his own safety.

For his part, Nyeku told the court that he needed bail as he was working on his Business Studies project that forms part of his final examination year marks.

The Chief Magistrate ruled that Nyeku be granted bail on condition that he does not return to the school.

“I think we should release him on bail so that he can go and write his mock examinations.

“We shall make arrangements that he should write his examinations from home. Let us hope that the school authorities will accede to our request,” the Chief Magistrate said.

Nyeku was granted P2,000 bail and the condition that he stay away from Nata Secondary School until the beginning of next term.

“In the event that you want help to consult with teachers concerning your project, you should liaise with the police to help you meet your teacher,” the magistrate added.

The accused will return to court on September 15 for mention.
