BFA engages BNSC over Zebras budget

Budget constraints almost grounded Zebras’ trip to Guinea Bissau recently. Sebego said the BFA office is already compiling figures as the national team prepares for a demanding three-month schedule, which will see the Zebras play six gruelling matches.

“We are working on the budget and hopefully we will meet the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) over the issue this week. We will then meet the government after that,” Sebego said.

While the Zebras’ budget for the six group stage matches will run into millions,  the campaign has a potential financial windfall for them.

Egypt, Tunisia and Senegal are powerhouses in Africa and their games are likely to be sold out, bringing the much-needed financial relief to the BFA.

Another potential reward is qualification to the AFCON finals to be played in Morocco next January.

Meanwhile, the BFA has sought a deadline extension from FIFA on the constituency tournaments ultimatum.

Sebego is confident that a solution will be reached soon, which will allay fears of a suspension. FIFA gave the BFA up to September 22 to find a solution or risk suspension.

The world soccer mother body argues the tournaments violate FIFA statutes.
