“We are not the first family to experience such a huge loss and we are not the last. God who has taken away shall comfort us,” he said. He explained that the first day the death was announced was the most difficult for the family and it was difficult for them to even communicate to each other. He said plans are well underway to give their son a decent sendoff.

“We appreciate that our son had given himself to the nation therefore we would not stop any organisation that was associated with him to do whatever they want to do for him as long as time allows,” he said.

Badirwang confirmed that officials of the Umbrella for Democratic Change had visited the family requesting permission to carry out their own independent investigations on the accident that claimed the Botswana Movement for Democracy President’s life. He said they granted them a go ahead though the family would not be part of whatever they will be doing. “We cannot stop them but it would not affect the family’s plans.

“They want to satisfy themselves on whether there was no foul play into the death or otherwise but the family is not part of those investigations. Ga re ba kganele go tswelela mme ebile ga re ba rome,” he added.

He added that his nephew’s body is still lying at Goodhope Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem t scheduled for tomorrow.

Badirwang has said the Friday funeral was necessary because the family belongs to the Seventh Day Adventist while Motswaledi was a member of the UCCSA which also cannot bury on Sunday.

The mood in the Motswaledi homestead in Goora Modikwana ward is a sombre one as mourners pour in to pay their respects and offer a helping hand in the household chores, some clad in BMD t-shirts. Motswaledi leaves behind one younger brother as the youngest brother also lost his life in a car accident some years ago.

The area Councillor Lesego Raditanka said during an interview that a person is priceless and Motswaledi was an extremely important figure to all who were close to him. “He was my younger brother despite different political affiliations.

“It is so sad that we had to lose a potential leader just like that. He was there when I got married and he always played a part when my children got married. I am just lost for words,” he said.
