Skydiving set for Makgadikgadi Epic

BTO acting chief executive officer, Thabo Dithebe, said that they have partnered with Skydive Botswana and Nata Conservation Trust in order to develop another tourism product.

He said that the skydiving activity stands to add to the diversity of the tourism sector in the country and in the Makgadikgadi area.

“We believe that this event will enhance the spread of economic and social benefits related to the tourism sector and the beneficiary communities of the Nata Conservation Trust and Botswana as a whole,” he said.

Dithebe further said the event would bring together professional skydivers in Botswana and neighbouring countries.

He added that he is positive that the event will be an instant hit with adventure lovers as there will be lots of activities, including quad/motor bike and boat rides to view the birdlife in the area.

Dithebe said that although skydiving is a relatively new sport in Botswana, which has not yet achieved the popularity enjoyed by other sporting codes, they believe it has potential to entice domestic and regional markets.

He pointed out that skydiving also has the power to attract sponsors to raise the goodwill of Botswana as an authentic sporting and adventure tourism destination.

Public Relations Officer of Skydive Botswana, Garai Makaya, said that they have a lot in store for those who will be gracing the event.

He said that they will be offering a tandem skydive, which will allow members of the public to do an actual skydive and experience the thrill of the sport first hand.

He said that they would attempt a 16-person star formation by professional divers to set the First Botswana Formation Skydiving record.

Makaya said that they would be hosting other skydivers from Namibia, South Africa and New Zealand at the event.
