Halfway point in Masilo rape trial

The state will call a medical doctor who examined the alleged rape victim and a Mogoditshane Police investigating officer as its final two witnesses.

Thus far, the complainant in the case and her brother have already testified and undergone intense cross-examination from Masilo’s lawyer, Kgosietsile Ngakayagae.

Ngakayagae has said his client could take the stand in his own defence, although this would depend on what evidence the State witnesses give.

Masilo, a 24-year-old former Botho University student, is alleged to have brutally raped and robbed a woman in her Phase IV home on August 9, 2012, causing her grievous bodily harm in the process.

He is also alleged to have stolen property including a Samsung and a Nokia cellphone in the process.

Besides his rape and robbery charges, Masilo is separately charged with the murder of a 17-year-old St Joseph’s College female student on November 16, 2012, in a sensational case that dominated newspaper headlines and generated intense public comment.

The State says Masilo attacked the schoolgirl inside her home in Phase IV, with pictures of his alleged bloody capture going viral on social media.

Meanwhile Masilo was recently in the dock on fresh charges stemming from a November 13, 2012 incident in Kgale View in which he is accused of indecently assaulting a woman and robbing her of a cellphone valued at P800.

Masilo has pleaded not guilty to the latest charges.
