BIUST’s Director of Physical Planning and Campus Facilities, Mpho Mphengula told journalists last week that 48 rooms have been completed which will accommodate 1,000 students.

He said the new institution has engaged youths with construction skills in various refurbishment works at the old hospital. “Most of the construction work is on schedule,” he explained.

“The dining hall, the kitchen, toilets and showers are being painted. New equipment and furniture have been bought and will be fitted soon.”

Youth Construction Team director, Kabelo Kaisara said construction started on June 2 and all those involved were confident of completing the work by October.

“Most of the rooms are painted and we are doing finishing touches in the launderette,” he said.

According to BIUST officials, the university will also renovate the clinic at the old hospital and operate it around the clock, in order to help both the student body and the community at large.

Mphengula further said they would erect prefab cabins at both Old Sekgoma Hospital and the new Institute of health Sciences (IHS) to augment any shortfall in classroom accommodation.

He said since there would be two satellite campuses in Serowe and Palapye, BIUST would outsource a shuttle service between the campuses from local bus operators.
