Botswana Post unveils stamps

The Domestic Animals In Botswana issue consists of six stamps: four with cattle, goats, chickens and donkeys that depict rural life, and two stamps of cats and dogs depicted in an urban setting but highlighting the value they add in both rural and urban settings.

Speaking at the stamp unveiling ceremony Botswana Post Chief Executive Pele Moleta said that stamps have always been a part of their mandate and the new additions are a way of retaining the foundation. Moleta noted that the stamps carry aspects and details that make Botswana what it is. “Stamps communicate and ours brand and show the unique side of Botswana. Some nations don’t have domestic animals that we have here,” he added.

He further said ‘Domestic Animals of Botswana’ reflects life in Botswana, which is of interest to collectors locally and overseas.

For his part, Head of Business Development Cornelius Ramatlhakwane said that stamps carry the history of a nation. He added that the stamps tell the story of the development of Botswana and its origins in terms of tradition, dwellings, culture and natural resources. “Stamps take us through the colonial era, right through to the period of our self determination in 1966 and the present times”, he said. He added that the Domestic Animals in Botswana stamp issue illustrate Batswana’s relationship with domestic animals and their purpose in their lives.

Ramatlhakwane stated that Botswana will from the 5-12 August 2014 attend the PhilaKorea Stamp exhibition in Seoul Korea, which will give Botswana Post an opportunity to sell all the stamps launched in 2014 to an international forum of auctioneers, agents, collectors and dealers. The last time Botswana took part in an international stamp exhibition was in China in 2009.
