Amateur golfers warned over cash prizes

Mpho Kelosiwang, BGU secretary told Mmegi Sport that as a way of keeping the sport ‘pure’ and free from cheating, people should differentiate professional golfers and amateurs. He said some players might get tempted and manipulate handicaps in order to walk away with prizes.

He explained that professionals play golf to make a living while amateurs are in it for leisure. Kelosiwang said that if amateurs accept cash prizes, they risk suspension for breaking the rules. Already, BGU has suspended some players after they broke the rule.

He advised that cash prizes for amateurs should always be avoided and players would rather be rewarded in kind. “The rule is also meant to make it easy for BGU to get sponsorship. If we do not have measures in place, it will be difficult to control the game. I will write to all clubs and remind them about the rule,” Kelosiwang said.

Meanwhile, BGU will host the monthly professional golfers tournament at the Gaborone Golf Club tomorrow morning. Kelosiwang said the golfers would play two rounds.

There will also be the Dr Kim Memorial tournament to be player over two rounds tomorrow afternoon. Kelosiwang said the aim of the tournament is to build momentum for players.

He said the team that will represent Botswana at the 2016 Olympic Games would be made up of professionals.

He lamented that that sponsorship remains an obstacle for the monthly events. He said they are currently engaged in talks with potential sponsors. The Dr Kim Memorial moves to Selebi-Phikwe Golf Club next weekend.

Over 100 golfers both - men and women - are expected to take part in the only BGU tournament meant to raise funds.

The funds will be used to assist Selebi-Phikwe and Francistown clubs. Kelosiwang explained that professionals will play over 72 holes and amateurs will play 36 holes.

He said Sopranos Bikers from South Africa will participate in the tournament, which is in its sixth year. He said the Bikers would have an opportunity to address youth on various topics such as making sound choices in life and making a living out of sport. He stated that a charity organisation in Selebi-Phikwe will receive food hampers.
