Boko was scheduled to officially open the conference at 11am, but events only got underway at 3pm due to delays by him and other leaders.

Later, UDC secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi, told journalists that the party would do its best to address the trend within its ranks. “The issue of late coming affects all UDC members.

“It is not only done by the leadership, or any particular target group. We will address this issue because it portrays us in a bad light as a party,” Motswaledi said.

The constant late coming of UDC leaders to their own events, has irked some within the opposition coalition who have read it as a sign that members do not respect the group or their fellow members.

Meanwhile UDC Vice President, Motlatsi Molapise told the media that the UDC has not closed its doors on the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) joining the opposition coalition.

“We are still open for the BCP to join the UDC. In fact we invite everyone to join the party because the umbrella is a national project to liberate Batswana from the sufferings meted out to them by the ruling party,” he said.

“If at all the BCP joins the umbrella before the general elections, we will see how we can accommodate them.

Molapise was responding to remarks by BOFEPUSU Labour Secretary, Johnson Motshwarakgole that the UDC and the BCP should consider forming a coalition to topple the BDP from power.

The outspoken unionist said it was not too late for the two parties to join hands and contest the 2014 general elections.  However, the BCP – at its own conference held in Gaborone over the holidays – ruled out the possibility of a coalition at this year’s general elections. The BCP said it would only urge its members to vote for the UDC in areas where it (BCP) was not fielding candidates of its own.
