BDP founders son murdered

Leon’s late father, Benny, was among the small group which gathered under the now famous morula tree on February 28, 1962, to form what would later be known as the Botswana Democratic Party. The older Steinberg was appointed treasurer at the initial meeting and would later be elected substantively in the same position at the party’s first congress.

Yesterday, police in Kanye said they were investigating the younger Steinberg’s death after informants led them to the discovery of his body in the passenger seat of his Mazda bakkie.

Steinberg was found on the outskirts of Lotlhakane village near Kanye and while police said they were still establishing the nature of his death, they confirmed that the body was blood-spattered with signs of assault.

“We received the report on Sunday morning and upon arriving at the scene, we discovered the body of the deceased man covered in blood stains,” Kanye Police Station Commander, Superintendent Kealositse Konyana told Mmegi. “We await the postmortem results as investigations continue.”

Mmegi has been informed that Steinberg had left the village on Friday with P50,000 he intended to purchase a drilling machine with.

“He managed to secure the purchase for P30,000 and informed his family that he was returning,” an informer close to the family said. “However, he was later found deceased with only P1,800 on him.”

Police say no suspects have thus been arrested or linked to the incident.
