Spar has donated P300,000 to sponsor the tournament. Players will be selected into the six teams created specifically for the competition. The national team will be joined by Under-20, Under-25 and Over-25 sides plus two select squads; one made up of students and the other from players in the constituency tournaments to take part in the new competition.

BONA introduced the new competition after an extensive bench-marking exercise with Singapore Super League and South African Brutal Fruit tournament.

BONA marketing and publicity officer, Ntebo Maplanka said the tournament is player driven as opposed to team driven.

'Its main focus will be on the players' potential to showcase their talent, in a bid to reach the highest potential in the game of netball,' she explained.

The initiative comes as a welcome development to Botswana where the league had become monotonous with army sides BDF Cats and TASC qualifying for the finals every year.

'The same teams make it to the finals hence the same players are picked for the senior national team,' Maplanka said.

The new development is BONA's plan to identify the best possible team for next year's World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

Maplanka said Spar had shown commitment towards the development of women sport and are convinced the new tournament will grow individuals for a better national team. The tournament will run for five weeks.

Meanwhile, the league will start soon after the World Cup qualifying games in September. BONA is still looking for a sponsor for the league.
