This was revealed at a press conference held yesterday by Kgosietsile Mariri of BP Implements. Mariri’s company is the one responsible for bringing Lattimore to Botswana for his performance billed for the same day in the evening.

The Desert Bush Walk’s aim is to raise funds for the construction of a Creative Learning Centre, which will house a library and hands on/carpentry-learning lab at Sese Primary School in the village of Sese.

Speaking at the event Mariri stated that Lattimore is well spoken on issues of education and women.

He said that it is only befitting that during his visit here Lattimore gets a chance to meet with children and give them an address on the importance of education. Mariri added that although entertainment is overlooked most of the time it plays a contributing role in the economy of any country.

For his part the brains behind the walk Archibald Ngakayagae said that he and his partner on the project, Amy Benson are driven by the spirit of volunteerism. He said that they are hoping to raise more than P200,000.  He explained that construction is very expensive hence why the need to target a higher amount.

Ngakayagae further added that around 800 students will benefit from construction of the centre.

He said despite being near one of the biggest mines in Africa, the village of Sese only has one primary school and the village is under-developed.

He added that the centre would not only benefit students but it will also work to combat alcoholism, gender inequality, gender based violence, poverty and unemployment.

As is stands Sese Primary School, does not have a library as the classroom that was once used as a library had to be converted back to a classroom to accommodate the growing number of students.

In addition the centre, which will also house carpentry learning aims to encourage a hands on approach to learning rather than just being theory based.

The 25 km walk will start at 7 00 am at Jwaneng Diamond Mall and take participants on a bush trail from Jwaneng to Sese. There will also be a 10km walk to accommodate those who cannot do the full 25km. Registration to participate in the walk is P100.
