Former world champion, Montsho and Olympic silver medalist, Amos are yet to hit top form, but there are no such worries for Makwala who was once again in devastating form on Saturday.

The man who has smashed all three national sprints records romped home in 44.71 secs in the Diamond League. The previous weekend he recorded Africa’s best 400m time of 44.01 secs. He is now a favourite for a medal at the Commonwealth Games, which start on July 23 in Glasgow.  Despite his recent good run, Makwala said he is not under pressure to deliver a medal in Glasgow. “I am not under pressure. I understand you can win and lose some,” he said. Makwala attributed his improved form to good training during the off-season.

The same cannot be said about Montsho’s form. She appears to be struggling after recording her worst time this year and finishing a disappointing fifth in the British Athletics Grand Prix on Friday. She crossed the line in 51:35 secs.  Her progression line shows that she peaked magnificently in 2011, but has suffered a worrying dip in 2014. She is struggling to replicate the form that landed her the Diamond League 400m title last year.

Meanwhile, Amos faces a triple headache as he prepares for next week’s Commonwealth Games. Over the weekend, he did not compete in the 800m, instead opting to race in the 400m. He finished eighth, completing the race in 46:34secs.  His tormentor, David Rudisha returned to form over the weekend and appears in good shape after winning the 800m. Besides, the world record holder, another Kenyan who pose a threat to Amos is Asbel Kiprop and South African, Andre Olivier.

The Botswana track star has proved he has a big race temperament and should still be considered a favourite for a podium finish in Glasgow.
