President Ian Khama made the announcement at Nkoyaphiri Kgotla Saturday evening around the bonfire, where he was accompanied by assistant ministers Keletso Rakhudu, and Patrick Masimolole, also the area MP.

President Khama announced that there will be government officers around the country specifically for the elderly in an effort to improve their welfare. The President said the officers will report to the coordinator in Gaborone.

Although he did not state what kind of services the elderly will receive from government through the new initiative, President Khama hinted that the new programme will ensure that the elderly are well looked after, and offered the health care they need.

The announcement coincided with the President’s gesture of giving out blankets to the needy, and sharing with them dinner around the bonfire.

“I have brought gifts for some of you…we have the elderly…our parents we should not forget them, they have brought us up, they built this country, we should always have them in our thoughts, they need our assistance. We have the duty to look after those that can no longer fend for themselves”.

The President then announced that government will in a few weeks time announce a new programme to increase assistance towards the disabled and the elderly.

The President also distributed bibles, as well as handing the local headman Pheto Motlhabani a chair. Besides the blankets the elderly were also given solar powered lamps. Recently the Ministry of Government distributed radio sets around the country for use by identified lonely elderly people.
