Contestants in the fashion design and dress making categories made fabulous garments using a variety of fabric including. leteisi.
Interestingly, most of the designers who entered the competitoin were young people,. This shows the promise that exists in the industry. Designers from around the country were represented at the finals.
This year’s winner in the fashion design category was Boitumelo Seboko of Ramotswa, while Obonetse Dibeela of Kanye took the second position and the third position went to Lucia Matumba. In the dress making category, firt prize went to veteran dress maker, Julia Kwele who was followed by Onkemetse Mogai, while the third position went to Mirriam Ngetai.
The winner of the male model category was Kesegofetse Senna, and the runner up was Anthony Sebolai. The third position was awarded to David Kereng.
In the female model category, Lindani Shadreck won first place, while position two went to Kaone Monamodi and Tricia Elias grabbed the third position.
The cash prizes were awarded as follows: The winner in each category recieved P10,000, P8,000 for each runner up and P6,000 for third position.
Last year’s fashion design winner, Botho Chalengwa, also showcased some of her collections.
The fashion show was spiced with thrilling performance by local acts. Afro jazz songbird Nnunu Ramogotsi raised the roof with her hit track role la tsie. She closed the show with her splendid performance.
An official of the Department of Arts and Culture, Monica Selelo commented on the remarkable improvement of the show, both in terms of designs and the models’ attire. To her, this is an indication that the standards have raised. She said the contestants displayed the commitment and dedication.
Meanwhile, one of the judges, the Chief Executive Officer of Cape Town Fashion Council, Bryan Ramkilawan was equally impressed about the show. Ramkilawan said he was pleasantly surprised by the growth of Botwana’s fashion industry has grown, adding that te competition is a big step for the country. “Hopefully this will grow into something bigger. I was very surprised to see the standard of work,” he said.
