DJ Scratch shows true grit

DJ Scratch is now one of the most respected hip-hop DJs around and that has landed him a job as Dros’ resident DJ. Scratch said it all began in 2009 when he was still in junior school. “I became a DJ simply because of the passion I have for music.  Music is one of the things I most cherish after God.

The thrill in merging two songs into a mix and in making people enjoy their time, makes me happy knowing that I somehow contribute to their happiness and content through the music I mix,” he said.

He said that his career as a DJ kickstarted when he met a group of DJ’s called Fused Beatz who helped him understand all that is required to be a true DJ.  He said that they taught him all the basics of being a DJ, which include handling sound equipment, speaking to clients and pleasing the crowd.

DJ Scratch started playing at birthday parties, weddings, baby showers and children’s parties alongside his mentors.

“I later started school at Legae Academy and was given the opportunity of becoming one of the school’s resident DJs assisting Boikanyo, who was at the time their resident DJ. I started playing at all the school’s recreational events, where I tried my absolute best to rock at every single one of them,” he said.  He said his first big break was when he played at Bull n’ Bush for DJ Kuchi’s birthday party featuring Black Motion.

“I remember I played for only 30 minutes, but I managed to get more fans than I have ever had.  When I got on stage, I was so scared because I had never played for such a huge crowd.  Ironically, with all the fear I just continued playing and all I could hear was people screaming with each song I mixed.  It was the highlight of my career,” he said.

He added that as a DJ it is very important to market one’s craft and keep the right friends who will help one grow one’s career.

He said: “I decided to advertise myself through social media where I interacted with different local DJs and promoters who gave me the chance to play at some of the well-known spots and gigs around town and all this time I made sure I impressed while playing.”

Toward the end of 2012, DJ Scratch said he frequently played with DJ Kuchi at Bull n’ Bush.  He added that Kuchi was very instrumental in aiding him build his career and brand as he undoubtedly gave him the chance to improve as a DJ and in other aspects such as personality and character, which opened doors for him.  “I am truly grateful to him.  From then on I’ve been doing what I love and at the best level I can.  Now, I still continue to play at social events, corporate functions, concerts, shows and others.  I’m currently based at Dros alongside DJ Kuchi,” he said.
