Motlhale demands answers on Kagiso Seniors poor performance

Assistant Minister, Keletso Rakhudu yesterday told Parliament that besides these factors, the aftermath of the 2011 public service strike was also to blame for the school’s consistent ranking in the bottom three nationwide in the last couple of years.

In the midst of the public debate on the future of the former Shakawe Senior Secondary School students, South East South MP Odirile Motlhale also demanded answers on the spiralling performance at Kagiso.

Motlhale, through Tonota North MP Fidelis Molao, who represented him in Parliament yesterday, wanted to understand why the academic performances at the Ramotswa school had nosedived in recent years.

Rakhudu said Kagiso was part of a large number of schools countrywide, which have experienced a decline in performance since 2008.

He, however, also added that Kagiso students sneak out of the school at odd hours to indulge in substance abuse and have in the past burnt parts of the hostels.

“Parents have reneged on their responsibilities to the school as evidenced by their failure to attend Parents Teachers Association meetings and to collect students’ report,” he said.

Further, he said, inspections of the school in August 2012 and June 2013 had revealed, among others, poor adherence to education policies, poor curriculum delivery and inadequate structures to address student’s concerns.

“Teacher’s houses and boarding hostels have been maintained, but the rest of the school is still awaiting major maintenance to make it conducive to learning,” he said.

“The region will further reinforce the school management accounting for end of term results as a way of tracking and supporting the school performance record.

“The ministry will also be opening a sub-regional office in Ramotswa to bring services to the school.”
