Botswana stages first national motocross event

Previously, Botswana was under Motor Sport South Africa. In the new dispensation, Lobelo Racing Club Francistown (LRCF) will host the very first national motocross event in the country.

“This race will be attended by riders from Gaborone, Maun and Francistown and will consist of classes ranging from the most junior (four years old) to the faster more experienced riders in the MX1 class,” said Lobelo secretary, Lola Berrie. In recent weeks, the LRCF committee has been working hard to rehabilitate an old motocross track at Dumela to host the event. It now has a new 50cc track for riders from the age of four to eight on both two wheel motorcycles and quads.

“Now the main track has a variety of jumps ranging from one metre high to three metre high.

This track is unique in that it runs anticlockwise, which is very rare in motorsport,” said Berrie. She stated that the points scored in the race will be used in the selection of the team to represent Botswana at the Southern African region competition in Zambia next month.

She promised that next weekend will be an exciting time for Botswana, and that history will be made.

“Some of our riders have been riding for their whole lives and have never had the opportunity to ride for Botswana. Now they can,” said Berrie.

Mine Tech, Armstrong Racing Project, Security Services and Becco Bricks have donated P45,000 to sponsor the competition.
