F/town women football league to have more teams

Currently there are six teams in the league. “There are some clubs that have shown interest in participating in the league. One is based in Monarch, two in Letlhakane and another one from Coloured location. Having many teams will help widen participation among women football as well as attracting sponsors. When we have many teams in the north, sponsors know that they will have a greater mileage when they support us. It will also allow more women to take part in the sport, which will help develop it,” he said.

Jenamo added that having many teams could improve competitiveness in the league and widen the pool of players for the national team.

Two players from the north league, Maria Mochenge and Gadzanani Nelson are in the national Under-17 team.

The Francistown Women’s Football League was launched early this year and Jenamo bemoans lack of sponsorship. “We have been operating without a stable sponsor and this makes running the league difficult. The problem is that many sponsors are not convinced that women football can offer them great mileage. We have however been attracting a respectable crowd at our matches,” he said.

It was announced at the Francistown Regional Football Association (FRAFA) general assembly on Sunday that the women’s football league is closer to securing a sponsor together with the men’s Division One League.

The sponsorship is being negotiated by FRAFA but Jenamo said that a seven-member committee that runs the women’s league is also looking for sponsors.

“We have also approached other companies with a view of soliciting sponsorship for the league. We are hopeful that they will respond in

a positive manner soon. We are determined to offer a better product next season,” an optimistic Jenamo said.

Meanwhile two top women teams in the north, Francistown United and Coloured Stars will welcome Prisons tomorrow in a one day pre-season tourney sponsored by Sami Transport.
