The fallout from the logo change-back at the University of Botswana continued yesterday with reports of panic among old graduates who fear that the institution will recall their qualification documents bearing the abandoned logo.

Students who graduated from the University between 2008 and 2013, fear that they will be asked to surrender their certificates, diplomas and degrees which bear the logo introduced and later abandoned by the institution.

The recently abandoned logo was introduced in 2008, with millions of Pula spent on developing and publicising it, apart from the cost of incorporating it into the University’s official signage.

Yesterday, former graduates told Mmegi that they had received reports of a possible recall of documents bearing the old logo.

UB Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Jacob Kelebeng said the student body had been approached by panicky graduates, demanding answers on the possible recall of documents.

“Of course old graduates are panicking about the issue and as SRC, we are trying to explain the matter to them,” he said.

“However, in the UB Council, we had agreed that some things should not be changed to avoid costs.

“Recalling student’s certificates was one of the key issues we had agreed should not be done. Another was the change of the logo on vehicles.”

UB spokesperson, Mhitshane Reetsang urged old graduates not to panic, as the resolution on the old logo appearing on qualification documents would be upheld.

“Even UB stationery that has the old logo will be used until it finishes, before we order new items with the new logo,” she said in a telephone interview.
