Another BDP cllr becomes mokoko

“I have decided to contest as an independent candidate (mokoko). I have been a councillor for this ward for 10 years. My Bulela Ditswe primary elections appeal was not handled well. I will ensure that the party loses this constituency,” Kgosiemang said after she quit.

She said she was shocked last month when the BDP central committee changed its decision for a rerun in the ward without consulting her. The Kweneng region BDP chairperson, Leo Motlhophi has confirmed Kgosiemang’s resignation.

Boswelakoko is one of the wards that the BDP won with a big margin in the 2009 elections. The party won the area with 730 votes followed by Botswana National Front (BNF) with 347.

Molepolole North is one of the constituencies that gives the BDP sleepless nights.

The ruling party fears that it might lose the seat that is currently held by Assistant Minister, Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri. Recently, cabinet ministers have been holding Kgotla meetings in each ward in the constituency. The opposition has said these are illegal campaign meetings to drum up support for Matlhabaphiri who faces an uphill battle against Mahomed Khan of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).

On June 26, President Ian Khama is scheduled to hold Kgotla meetings in different wards in Molepolole North. He will start at Mogokotswane, then Boswelakoko before addressing public servants after lunch. He will meet with the village elders at Matlhalerwa ward in the evening.
