“The negotiations come against a difficult background of low metal prices, below budget production, revenue losses recorded in the 2013 financial year and projected losses for the 2014 financial year well as other significant operational challenges.

“The following options were presented to the Union being  five percent across the board and P80 percent housing allowance increase, six percent across the board and a differentiated increase ranging from 4.5 to 12 percent based on job grades

“With reference to the offer of six percent under the current business climate, we believe that this is a reasonable offer to mitigate against inflation. “Management has continued to find and implement ways to improve our operational efficiency and developed a new vision and strategy to take BCL beyond the current business model of mining and smelting nickel and copper alone.

“We remain hopeful that management and the Union will reach an amicable settlement of the wage dispute.”
